The Bamberg seminary is the training center of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bamberg for candidates for priesthood who do not belong to any order.

The priestly formation takes place in addition to the study of Catholic theology and aims to ensure areas of priestly formation that are not the subject of scientific theology.

The former building of the seminary was converted into the so-called “ diocese house of St. Otto ” in 2007, to which the “ theological and catechetical library ” moved again.

history

Seminary (2014)

The Bamberg seminary goes back to the " Seminarium Ernestinum ", a seminary with an associated academic training, which was founded in 1586 by Prince Bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf and is located in the monastery in the Au , at that time a Carmelite monastery , between today's streets Grüner Markt and An the university located. These buildings were later taken over by the Jesuits, who were also entrusted with the management of the school.

Current development

The candidates for the priesthood of the Archdiocese of Bamberg have been living in the Würzburg seminary and studying at the University of Würzburg since 2007, as long as the theological faculty in Bamberg is inactive . In Bamberg, however, from the 2008/09 winter semester a theological preparatory course was set up for candidates for priesthood in the Bamberg metropolitan area as well as for all East German dioceses that are located in the Erfurt regional seminar . The situation is similar in Passau , where a corresponding preparatory course was set up for southern Bavaria.
