History and Development

In 1975 the training place of the Opus Summi Sacerdotis, founded in the diocese of Regensburg , was moved from Schwaz in Tyrol to Heiligenkreuz. A church and state recognized priest training center had existed in the Heiligenkreuz Abbey since 1802. After the death of Bishop Rudolf Graber , the study house, whose alumni studied at the University of Heiligenkreuz, was named Collegium Rudolphinum and remained under the sponsorship of the Diocese of Regensburg until 2007. After the latter had announced its intention to give up responsibility, the Austrian Bishops' Conference decided in March 2007 to continue the seminary in the sponsorship of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey.

On June 19, 2007, Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller of Regensburg handed over responsibility for the Collegium Rudolphinum to the monastery in a ceremony. Since then, the institute, for which the abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey is responsible, has been known as the Cross-Diocesan Seminary Leopoldinum Heiligenkreuz . The bishops of the (arch) dioceses of Vienna , Graz and St. Pölten form a permanent commission of the Austrian Bishops' Conference for the Leopoldinum.

The seminarians of the Leopoldinum are sent there by dioceses or religious orders and study at the Benedict XVI University. Heiligenkreuz .
