Karl Josef Wallner OCist (actually Josef Wallner , born February 24, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian religious priest (Cistercian). He was rector of the Philosophical-Theological College Benedict XVI. Heiligenkreuz in Lower Austria. Wallner represents at the local university as a professor , the subjects dogmatic and sacramental theology and worked as a youth counselor and head of the Public Relations in Heiligenkreuz . Since September 1, 2016, he has been missio's National Director for Austria.

Live and act

Origin and career

Josef Wallner was born as the son of Josef and Margarethe Wallner and grew up in Wampersdorf in Lower Austria . His parents were merchants. In 1982 Wallner joined the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz near Baden and took the religious name Karl . Between 1981 and 1985 he studied in Heiligenkreuz, 1986 in Vienna, where he worked as Mag. Theol. sponded . In 1988 he was ordained a priest. Monastery life, pastoral care and public relations

Between 1993 and 1998 he was the dean's youth pastor of the Archdiocese of Vienna . From 1999 to 2016 he was the youth pastor of Heiligenkreuz Abbey and responsible for the monthly youth vigil, an evening prayer event for young people. In the same period he was responsible for the public relations work of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey and built up the monastic websites and address management. University director

In 1999 he took over the management of the Heiligenkreuz University of Applied Sciences, initially as dean . Father Karl Wallner is known for his extensive lecturing activities, including catechesis and humorous presentations. He has published over 20 popular books on subjects of theology and spirituality as an author. His book Who Believes Will Be Blessed (2009) made it onto the Spiegel bestseller list.

Missio National Director

In 2016, Karl Wallner was appointed National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies missio by Pope Francis , one of the largest donation organizations in Austria. His predecessor was Leo Maasburg . Missio is subordinate to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and collects for church projects in the poorest countries in the world. With the assumption of this function he gave up all monastic offices exercised up to then to other confreres.

Mission Manifesto

In March 2018, Wallner was a co-editor of the " Mission Manifesto ", with which evangelically influenced theologians from German-speaking countries presented ten theses for a more self-confident and missionary attitude of the Catholic Church.

In private, Wallner prefers to listen to music from the English-speaking world, his favorite performer is Michael Jackson .

Since one of his hobbies is weight training , he has been the sports supervisor of the "monastic fitness center" since 2000, the establishment of which goes back to Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck , who wanted to be physically active during his stay in the monastery to write the script for his film The Lives of Others .
