Franz Lackner


Franz Lackner OFM (born July 14, 1956 in Feldbach , Styria , as Anton Lackner ) has been Archbishop of Salzburg since 2013 . Since 2015 he has been deputy chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference . On June 16, 2020, he was elected as the successor to Cardinal Christoph Schönborn OP chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference.
Life
Franz Lackner grew up in St. Anna am Aigen and completed an electrician apprenticeship in Bad Radkersburg . In 1978/79 he was stationed twice as a UN soldier in Cyprus for half a year . From 1979 to 1984 Lackner attended the humanistic advanced high school in Horn .
On September 16, 1984 he became a novice in the Franciscan order in the Franciscan monastery in Reutte . The temporal vows followed on September 16, 1985, the eternal on September 2, 1989. On June 23, 1991 received Lackner by Bishop Johann Weber in Graz Cathedral , the ordination . On October 23, 2002, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Graz-Seckau and titular bishop of Balecium . The Salzburg Cathedral Chapter selected him from a three-way proposal by Pope Francis to succeed Alois Kothgasser as Salzburg Archbishop, which was confirmed by the Austrian Federal Government on November 13, 2013 in accordance with the Concordat . Pope Francis officially appointed him the new Archbishop of Salzburg on November 18, 2013. He is therefore entitled to wear the legacy purple everywhere. That is why in the coat of arms Galero and the 20 tassels are not colored green, as is usual for archbishops, but red.
Archbishop Lackner received the pallium , the insignia of a metropolitan , from Pope Francis on June 29, 2014, the solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul .
After the resignation of the Styrian diocesan bishop Egon Kapellari, accepted by the Holy See on January 28, 2015 , Archbishop Lackner has been Deputy Chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference since the beginning of March 2015. In the Bishops' Conference, Franz Lackner has been responsible for the area of "marriage and family" and the topic of "life protection" since November 2018.
The Archbishop of Salzburg is a keen athlete. In his spare time, Lackner enjoyed running marathons (for example the Graz Marathon ) and played soccer himself . He is a fan of SK Sturm Graz .
In 2016 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien as Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and on July 27, 2016 in the pilgrimage basilica Maria Plain by Bishop Alois Kothgasser , Grand Prior of the Papal Laity Order and Archbishop Emeritus of Salzburg, invested in the Austrian Lieutenancy. He belongs to the Salzburg Commandery.
On June 16, 2020, Lackner was elected chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference in Mariazell . He succeeds Cardinal Christoph Schönborn.
Act
In connection with the Alois Schwarz case , the Archdiocese of Salzburg announced on December 20, 2018 that Archbishop Lackner had been appointed Apostolic Visitator for the Diocese of Gurk by Pope Francis . Lackner said he would start this service in mid-January 2019. In connection with the allegations published in February 2015 against the Salzburg auxiliary bishop Andreas Laun that he had " compared the crimes of the Nazis with homosexuality " in a lecture in November 2014 , Archbishop Lackner responded in a broadcast without mentioning Laun: "Weltanschauungsfragen und Sexual orientations must in no way be associated with inhuman and totalitarian systems (e.g. National Socialism).
