The Roman Catholic military ordinariate of Austria ( MilOrd , colloquially spread military diocese ), as the military ordinariate of the Republic of Austria, looks after around 98,000 Catholics in the Austrian armed forces . Since June 2015 it has been headed by Werner Freistetter .

history

The military chaplaincy is the oldest in the world under the categorical pastoral sectors, its history dates back to the 16th century. The military bishop has the same status as a diocesan bishop and belongs to the Austrian Bishops' Conference . The military vicariate-general (highest service of the military chaplaincy in the armed forces) and the secretariat of the military bishop are available to him as direct instruments for his management tasks. Its jurisdiction is cumulative with that of the territorially competent diocesan bishop. According to the Apostolic Constitution "Spirituali Curae Militum" and the "Statutes of the Military Vicariate General of the Republic of Austria" issued on March 30, 1989, the area of ​​jurisdiction of the military bishop extends to all members of the Federal Army and the Army Administration as well as their family members and military servants during their military service. The Episcopal Church is St. George's Cathedral in Wiener Neustädter Burg (Theresian Military Academy). The military bishop is usually appointed titular bishop of Wiener Neustadt as soon as the titular bishopric is vacant. At the moment, the retired military bishop Christian Werner still holds the diocese.

The military vicariate general is the supreme spiritual authority of the military bishop. His tasks include the implementation of the instructions of the military bishop to the military chaplains in Austria, personnel matters, the central registration of the members of the armed forces, the army administration as well as their family members and all conscripts and women in training service on duty. The military vicar general is responsible for the management .

Deanery parishes are military parishes under the direction of a dean's pastor (dean). He exercises leading and coordinating tasks in accordance with the relevant canon law provisions and the specifications of the military bishop over the respective subordinate military parishes. The military parishes are set up according to territorial principles with the military command and with the command of the Theresian Military Academy as well as with the command of the Army NCOs. The military pastor is the head of the military parish assigned to him. He conducts church services and church official acts. He is an advisor to the commanding officer and other consumers in the exercise of their duty of care as well as in matters of military pastoral care and pastoral psychology. He is also a companion in personal emergencies and crisis situations of individuals and teaches professional ethics.

The soldiers deployed abroad are looked after by Austrian military chaplains whenever possible. Three parishes abroad are currently institutionalized.

Other facilities

The Institute for Religion and Peace is an institution of the Military Ordinary of the Republic of Austria. It was founded in 1997 by military bishop Christian Werner to promote a scholarly examination of the current changes in security policy in the light of church social teaching.
