Werner Freistetter (born October 28, 1953 in Linz , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman . Since June 11, 2015 he has been the military bishop of Austria .

Life

Freistetter is the son of a high-ranking officer. He studied theology in Vienna and Rome and obtained a doctorate in social ethics. He was ordained a priest on October 9, 1979 in Rome by the Archbishop of Vienna , Cardinal Franz König . In Vienna he was active as a pastor and employed at the Institute for Ethics and Social Sciences at the University of Vienna . He later worked at the Pontifical Council for Culture in Rome. Freistetter was a member of the Mission of the Holy See to the OSCE and is spiritual assistant to the International Catholic Soldiers' Organization (AMI). In 2006 military bishop Werner appointed him episcopal vicar for science and research, fundamental theological issues and international relations. He served as a military chaplain on the Golan Heights and in Bosnia and Herzegovina . From 1997 to 2015 Freistetter was director of the Institute for Religion and Peace .

On April 13, 2015, his impending appointment to succeed Christian Werner as military bishop became known. The appointment by Pope Francis on April 16, 2015. Freistetter was on June 11, 2015 Cathedral of Wiener Neustadt from the apostolic nuncio Peter Zurbriggen consecrated bishop, co-consecrators were emeritus Austrian Military Bishop Christian Werner and the Slovak Military Bishop František Rábek .

From June 28, 2019 until the consecration of the new bishop on February 2, 2020, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the vacant diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt .
