Peter Stephan Zurbriggen (born August 27, 1943 in Brig , Switzerland ) is a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman , archbishop and diplomat emeritus of the Holy See .

Life

After graduating from the college "Spiritus Sanctus" Brig in 1962 , he completed his military service in the fortress artillery in Airolo . From 1963 to 1965 Peter Zurbriggen first studied Catholic theology and philosophy in the diocesan seminary of the diocese of Sion before his bishop François-Nestor Adam sent him to Rome , where he became an alum of the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum while studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University . Zurbriggen was ordained a priest on October 10, 1969 in Sant'Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio by the Berlin Archbishop, Alfred Cardinal Bengsch , and studied from 1969 to 1974 at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . From 1971 to 1973 he also worked as a religion teacher at the commercial high school of the Swiss school in Rome. At the Pontifical Lateran University , he was in 1975 with the canonical work "The principle of bona fides - approaches and ways of its realization in international law" at Agostino Curti-Gialdino doctorate .

Since March 5, 1975 in the diplomatic service of the Holy See , on November 13, 1975 he was appointed Nunciature Attaché and Nunciature Secretary in Bolivia . Pope Paul VI awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on November 29, 1976 .

On January 20, 1979 he became secretary of the nunciature in Bonn , before he became an auditor at the nunciature in Montevideo , Uruguay on September 3, 1982 and finally on July 17, 1985 in Paris , France . After being appointed Prelate of His Holiness in 1989, he was appointed Nunciature Council at the Pontifical Mission in Bangui , Central Africa , on July 1, 1989 and was from 1989 to 1991 for the Apostolic Delegation for Southern Africa ( South Africa , Botswana , Swaziland , Namibia ) and at the Apostolic nunciature active in the Kingdom of Lesotho . From 1991 to 1993 he worked at the Apostolic Nunciature in India and Nepal, based in New Delhi .

Pope John Paul II appointed Peter Zurbriggen Titular Archbishop of Glastonia on November 13, 1993 and appointed him Apostolic Delegate in Mozambique . On 6 January 1994 he donated Pope John Paul II himself in. St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Giovanni Battista Re , Archbishop of the Curia in the State Secretariat of the Vatican , and Josip Uhač , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and Head of the Pontifical Commission on Missions. In 1996 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Mozambique.

After five years of the Vatican diplomatic service in Africa took place on June 13, 1998 he was appointed apostolic nuncio to Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan based in Tbilisi before it on 15 October 2001 Apostolic Nuncio to Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania based in Vilnius became. On January 14, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria. He arrived in Vienna on April 2nd, 2009 and presented his accreditation to the Federal President of the Republic of Austria on April 17th , with which he took office. He was doyen of the diplomatic corps in Austria. Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on November 30, 2018.

He is a member of the General Assembly Brigensis and the AV Helvetia Romana in the Swiss Student Association . Since 2010 he has been an honorary member of the K.Ö.HV Leopoldina Innsbruck in the ÖCV . In 2017 he was awarded the Great Gold Medal of Honor with the Star by the Styrian state government , and in 2018 the Tyrolean state government awarded him the Great Tyrolean Eagle Order .
