François-Nestor Adam

François-Nestor Adam CRB (born February 7, 1903 in Étroubles , † February 8, 1990 in Sion ) was an Italian-Swiss clergyman, provost of the Great St. Bernard and Bishop of Sion .

Life

1919-1921 he studied in Turin jurisprudence and entered 1922 as a novice into the hospice on the Great St. Bernard. He was ordained a priest on August 28, 1927 and then worked from 1928 to 1932 as a lecturer in theology and philosophy and as a novice master in the hospice. In 1932 he acquired in the community Mex the Swiss citizenship , was 1,934 to 1,939 pastors in Ravoire (municipality Martigny-Combe ) and then to 1952 dean at the hospice.

On August 8, 1952 François-Nestor Adam was appointed bishop of Sion and received on 12 October, the episcopal ordination by the apostolic nuncio in Switzerland , Archbishop Filippo Bernardini . Adam's motto was Ubi caritas, ibi Deus (“Where there is love, there is God”).

Adam served as Bishop of Sitten until June 22, 1977 and took part in this capacity at the Second Vatican Council . From 1970 to 1976 he was President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference and head of Synod 72 . After the end of his tenure he was prior of Bourg-Saint-Pierre until 1984 . Under Adam, the seminary of Marcel Lefebvre was founded in Ecône in 1970 .
