Pierre Mamie

Pierre Mamie (born March 4, 1920 in La Chaux-de-Fonds , Switzerland ; † March 14, 2008 in Villars-sur-Glâne , Switzerland) was a Roman Catholic bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg .

Life

Pierre Mamie came from a family of watchmakers . After graduating from the College of St. Michael in Freiburg, he entered the Friborg seminary in 1941 . There he was ordained a priest on July 7, 1946 . He initially worked as a vicar in Lausanne. From 1955 to 1960 he studied theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, in 1958 he became the Pontifical Institute Biblico the doctor of theology doctorate and also earned a Licentiate in Biblical Studies. From 1960 to 1968 he was Regens of the Freiburg seminary. He was also Professor of Exegesis at the Seminary (1960–1968) and Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Freiburg (1966–1968).

On July 15, 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed titular bishop of Otriculum and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 6, 1968 Charles Cardinal Journet ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg, François Charrière , and the Bishop of Chur, Johannes Vonderach . In 1970 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg.

Bishop Mamie was chairman of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) from 1977 to 1979 and 1992 to 1994 . During his tenure in 1994 he had to deal with the so-called “diocese article” (Art. 72 Para. 3) in the Swiss Federal Constitution, which stems from the Kulturkampf of the 19th century and which authorized the state to approve the diocesan borders; this article was abolished in a 2001 referendum.

Mamie was a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (1973-2000) and a member of the Congregation for the Clergy (1979-1982). In 1976 he was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

In 1995, his resignation was granted by John Paul II ; also in 1995 he was made an honorary citizen of Freiburg.

Mamie cultivated numerous friendships with artists and authors throughout her life, particularly with Jean Tinguely and Frédéric Dard . Together with Frédéric Dard he was the author of the work "D'homme à homme". After his resignation in 1995 he devoted himself particularly to the publication of the works of Charles Journet .

He died in the foyer Jean-Paul II in Villars-sur-Glâne and was buried on March 18, 2008 in the Freiburg Cathedral of St. Nicholas .
