Frédéric Dard

Frédéric Charles Antoine Dard (born June 29, 1921 in Bourgoin-Jallieu , Isère , † June 6, 2000 in Bonnefontaine , Switzerland ) was a French writer, a. a. of detective novels .
Life
Dard was the son of Francisque Dard, a former worker of Eugène de Dietrich , and his wife Joséphine-Anna Cadet. After Black Thursday (October 24, 1929) his family settled in Lyon ( Département Rhône ). There he attended the Écoles La Martinière .
In November 1942 Dard married Odette Damaisin and had two children with her: Patrice (* 1944) and Élizabeth (1948-2011). Between July 1944 and March 1949 the family lived in Lyon (La Croix-Rousse). The marriage was unhappy and the couple separated.
On June 14, 1968, Dard married Françoise de Caro, a daughter of the publisher Armand de Caro, for the second time . With her he had a daughter: Joséphine (* 1970), the future wife of Guy Carlier .
Frédéric Dard died two weeks before his 79th birthday on June 6, 2000 in Bonnefontaine in the canton of Friborg . His grave is on the Cimetière de Saint-Chef .
reception
Dard is one of the most prolific French-speaking authors. He wrote almost 200 novels under his pseudonym San Antonio alone . Dard said he chose this name after the Texan city of San Antonio . It is worth mentioning that the San Antonio novels are kept pseudo-autographical: the protagonist, Superintendent Antoine San-Antonio, tells the reader his adventures personally. He is supported by the inspectors César Pinaud and Alexandre-Bénôit Bérurier.
According to his own admission, Dard was inspired by Louis-Ferdinand Céline , William Faulkner and John Steinbeck , but also by Peter Cheyney and Georges Simenon . Since Dard has a weakness for colloquial French in his novels , Argot and the like. a. Slang expressions developed, the publication of a San Antonio dictionary later became necessary.
In addition to the pseudonym San-Antonio , Dard used other names, under which he published only a few works. Are known u. a. the names Maxell Beeting , Verne Goody , Wel Norton , Cornel Milk .
In addition to his detective novels, Dard tried his hand at plays with varying degrees of success. His first - Les salauds vont en enfer - he was able to publish in 1954 together with Robert Hossein as Grand Guignol .
After Frédéric Dard's death, his son Patrice tried to continue his father's work under the pseudonym "San Antonio".
