The girl from Hamburg is a French film drama from 1958 by Yves Allégret with Hildegard Knef in the title role. At her side, Daniel Gélin plays the male lead. The story is based on an idea by José Bénazéraf .

action

The French seaman Pierre landed in Hamburg for the first time in 15 years. He once worked here in 1943 as a prisoner of war in the port facilities and survived the terrible nights of bombing. Now, in 1958, he is on shore leave with his two friends Georges and Jean-Marie and wants to refresh old memories. These memories primarily have to do with a girl named Maria, a young woman who gave him some perks back then. In retrospect, Pierre has glorified this old love, which makes the sobering reunion all the more drastic.

The young girl of yore has become a disillusioned middle-aged woman who earns her living as a mud catcher in the hippodrome on the Hamburg amusement mile in St. Pauli. Nevertheless, the two of them have a gentle reunion followed by a night of love. But happiness is fleeting and short-lived. Both can not jump over their shadow and let the chance of a new happiness pass. The consequences are dramatic. The following morning, Pierre is stabbed to death by the believer of one of his comrades in the street, whereupon Maria, who believes that her lover has left her forever, kills herself with an overdose of sleeping pills.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “A hopelessly pessimistic fable that made detailed descriptions of the soul and stimulating milieu passages too broad. It is played out well but too long. "

"Drama based on the model of ' Hafen im Nebel ', annoying in the vulgarity of the (visual) language and the stringing together of speculative scenes."
