Hippodrome (Hamburg)
The hippodrome was an entertainment venue in Hamburg - St. Pauli . It was on the Große Freiheit 10/12. Even before the First World War , Paul Becker opened “Beckers Hippodrom” here, a restaurant with horse management and 600 seats. In 1929 it was bought by Hermann Bartels, the father of Willi Bartels .
The restaurant gained fame through the feature film Große Freiheit No. 7 from 1943 with Hans Albers , who appeared there as an aging mood singer, and Ilse Werner .
In 1944 the building was completely destroyed by Allied air raids. In 1945 it opened its doors again. In 1948 the German entrepreneur Willi Bartels (1914 - 2007) bought the property. The hippodrome closed at the beginning of the 1970s.
Another hippodrome was located at Reeperbahn 136 and was converted into a Top Ten Club in 1960 .
There was a third hippodrome between 1909 and 1919 in Grosse Freiheit No. 58, today's Gruenspan .
