The Hiesberg is a ridge in the Melk district that runs in a west-east direction. At the highest point it reaches a height of 558  m above sea level. A.

geography

This mountain ridge, about 8 km long, stretches from Anzendorf (municipality of Schollach) in the east to Mannersdorf bei Zelking in the west. It is bounded in the north by the Danube valley and in the south by the Mank and Melk . Most of the Hiesberg is covered with mixed forest. Two notable bodies of water have their source on the Hiesberg: the Weichselbach and the Greinbach. The Weichselbach flows into the Mank at Gassen, the Greinbach into the Danube at Melk .

etymology

Its name is derived from the Hiesburg on the northern slope of the ridge near Rosenfeld. This belonged to the family of Hirzperger , which was first mentioned in 1160.

Economical meaning

Historical

The serpentine found on the Hiesberg (see serpentine group ) was used for stone tools as early as the Neolithic Age . Finds of hole axes, stone hatchets and flat hatchets around Loosdorf show that the area was settled in the Neolithic period. The Hiesberg marble is also worth mentioning in this context .

Current

Currently, the Hiesberg is primarily used for forestry. Another use is through the mining of quartz sand on the eastern foothills of the Hiesberg. In Loosdorf, for example, aerated concrete components of the Ytong brand are manufactured, which consist of approx. 40 percent by weight of quartz sand. The quartz sand required for this is mined on the Hiesberg in Anzendorf.
