The savannah swamp shrew ( Crocidura longipes ) is a scarcely researched species of shrew from the genus of the white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura ). It is known of only seven specimens collected in Nigeria in 1966 and 1967 .
features
The savannah marsh shrew reaches a head-to-trunk length of 95 to 111 mm, a tail length of 59 to 65.9 mm, a hind foot length of 18 to 19 mm, an ear length of 10 to 12 mm and a weight of 15 to 24 g . The skull length is 24.2 to 25.4 mm, the skull width 10.1 to 10.8 mm. The total length of the upper row of teeth from the first incisor to the third molar is 10 or 10.9 mm. The back and peritoneum are a single color, dark brown. The front and rear feet are dark brown. The length of the relatively long hind feet corresponds to about 17% of the head-trunk length, the tail length corresponds to 60% of the head-trunk length. The brown tail is sparsely hairy. The skull is long and pointed. The area between the eye sockets and the jaws is narrow. The dentition is weak, especially the area of the upper molars. The number of teats and the karyotype are unknown.
Distribution area
All seven specimens come from the wetlands Dala and Iella near the Kainji National Park, about 3.2 km east of the village of Bahindi in western Nigeria.
Habitat and way of life
The savannah swamp shrew lives in the swamp savannah, which is characterized by grass one to two meters high, as well as palm trees and a few other trees. Nothing is known about their way of life.
status
The IUCN classifies the savannah shrew in the category of “insufficient data” ( data deficient ). Due to the state of war in Nigeria, there have been no expeditions in the region since 1967. The species could be threatened by habitat loss.
