The Kainji National Park ( Kainji National Park ) is a national park in western Nigeria on the banks of the Niger . The areas of the park are at an altitude of 120 to 340 m. The annual precipitation is 1000 mm.

history

The area of today's national park was in the protectorate of northern Nigeria, which was colonized by the British . In the 1900s, the area of the Kainji National Park was designated by them as a "forest reserve" for the first time. After a survey of the wild animal population in West Africa in 1932, Colonel AH Haywood recommended the establishment of a wild animal reserve in Borgu and in the area of today's Old Oyo National Park . In 1963, the Borgu Game Reserve , covering an area of 245 km², was designated Nigeria's second game reserve, six years after the first reserve, the Yankari Game Reserve, was created. The Zugurma Game Reserve was founded in 1971 and both parts received national park status in 1976. The wetlands around the Foge Islands in the reservoir are covered by the Ramsar Convention .

geography

The Kainji National Park consists of two parts, the Borgu Game Reserve with an area of 3929 km² in the west, only ten kilometers from the border with Benin , and the Zugurma Game Reserve with 1370 km² in the east. In between lies the Kainji reservoir , which is partially protected from fishing.

vegetation

In the Borgu Game Reserve , the larger part, dry savannah , tall grass and forests predominate. The Oli River , which has water all year round, flows through this landscape and then flows into the Niger . The Zugurma Game Reserve east of the lake, on the other hand, is covered by tropical rainforest .

fauna

So far 63 mammal, 241 bird and 28 reptile and amphibian species have been counted in the Kainji National Park. Mammals include lions , hippos , goblins , baboons , red flank duikers , bushbucks , reedbucks , crown duikers , horse , West African cow and lyre antelopes , white rams , African buffalos , warthogs , leopards , caracals , hyenas and hedgehogs . African elephants used to live in the area of the national park . The herds, however, migrated towards Benin. The cause is believed to be the fighter planes that took off near the city of Wawa .
