The Old Oyo National Park is located in the northeast of the state of Oyo , in the southwest of Nigeria . It extends over an area of 2512 km² on the ridge of the Upper Guinea threshold .

The national park got its name from the place in the park Oyo-Ile , the center of power of the historical kingdom of Oyo . The name Oyo-Ile comes from the Yoruba language , which translates as Old Oyo ( en : Old Oyo). The palace complex of the last kings of Oyo is located in Oyo-ile and is one of the most famous attractions of the national park. This cultural importance is reflected in the motto of the National Park: Merge our glorious past with nature (s: Blending our glorious past with nature ). The headquarters of the National Park Service of Nigeria National Park is located in Oyo , on Oyo-Iseyin road. The Old Oyo National Park is considered to be one of the most promising projects to develop eco-tourism and science tourism in Nigeria.

geography

The topography of the national park is determined by a flat plateau, which is only interrupted by a few elevations. Only in the north-east of the park are high granite rocks that protrude from the plain, while the center of the park is criss-crossed by flat hills and low ridges. The height profile of the park covers an altitude band from 330 to 508 meters above sea level. Most of the park is in the catchment area of the Ogun , Owu and Owe rivers , only the northern region of the park is in the Tessi river catchment area . The Ikere Gorge Dam was built on the Ogun and dammed a lake.

The vegetation of the national park is determined by the Guinea savannah, a wet savannah . The climate in the region is determined by the alternation of rainy and dry seasons, but is described as extremely humid . The rainy season lasts from April to October and reaches its highest intensity in summer with the arrival of the West African monsoons . The daily mean temperatures range from 25 to 35 ° C.

The national park is considered the westernmost distribution area of the Buntkopf rockhopper ( Picathartes oreas ).

development

The Old Oyo National Park is losing large parts of its forests due to continued logging. In the period from 1995 to 2007, 3,547 square kilometers of forest area were cleared, i.e. an average of 296 square kilometers per year (Mohammed et al. 2013).
