from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The up to 2130 m high Upper Guinea Sill is located as a continental highland in West Africa . It is named after the region of Upper Guinea and is one of the five great African thresholds .

location

The elongated threshold extends from West Africa (for example from the headwaters of the Niger and from the headwaters of Senegal in Guinea and also from Sierra Leone ) to the east via the West African states of Liberia , Mali , Ivory Coast , Burkina Faso , Ghana , Togo , Benin and Nigeria .

geography

The Upper Guinea Sill is the northwestern extension of the Lower Guinea Sill and the western extension of the North Equatorial Sill . Between these two adjacent thresholds, however, there is still the Adamaua highlands .

To the west, this large landscape passes over the course of the Senegal into the West African lowlands around Cape Verde . To the north of the Upper Guinea threshold which closes especially in the middle part Massina on Niger and its river valley and on the savannah zones and the Sahel the extensive grounds goes into the Sahara - Desert over. The Adamaua highlands join to the east . To the south it drops over wet savannahs and sometimes even over tropical rainforests to the great Gulf of Guinea .

National nature

The Upper Guinea threshold is dominated by the savannah , some parts of the south - along the Atlantic coast - by the tropical rainforest. While there are high mountainous regions in the west and east of the threshold , its central part - around the Volta reservoir  - is structured much lower. From the partly plateau-like heights, numerous small and large streams , rivers and streams flow mostly to the south, but also to the west and north-west. The largest river is the Niger , which rises in the west of the threshold and first leaves it to the northeast, then flows through it in a right curve to the southeast and flows into the Atlantic.
