Adamaua Highlands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The up to 2710 m high highlands of Adamaua (also: Adamaoua or Adamawa ) are located as continental high mountains northeast of the so-called Africa knee. The name is derived from Modibo Adama , the founder of the Emirates Adamaua . The name of the Cameroonian region of Adamaoua and the Nigerian state of Adamawa are derived from this emirate .

geography

The mountains are located in northern Cameroon , with small foothills extending into eastern Nigeria , western areas of the Central African Republic and south-western Chad .

The Adamaua Highlands are the high mountain link between the Upper Guinea Swell , which borders to the northwest, and the North Equatorial Swell to the east . Located between these two thresholds, it merges into the Nigerian lowlands in the west. In the north it goes over the valley of the river Benue and the Mandara mountains to the north in the Chad basin . As already mentioned, the Upper Guinea Sill joins in the east and the Lower Guinea Sill in the south . A little further south-east is the Congo Basin - not directly adjacent .

National nature

The north is dominated by the wet savannah, the south by the extensive tropical rainforest . In the mountainous heights, numerous small and large streams and rivers arise: These have often cut deeply into the landscape. This is illustrated by the example of the rivers Benue , which has its source here and then flows west to the Niger , and Djérém ; on the latter lies the Mbakaou Lake .

Geohydrology

The Adamaua highlands are geohydrologically interesting from the fact that they are located on the watershed of four large catchment areas. The headwaters of the "northern" Vina and the Mbéré , which drain into the Chad Basin, are located in a north-easterly direction, and in the south of the "southern" Vina and the Lom , which drain into the Sanaga . In addition, the Benue in the north and the Faro in the north- west , a tributary of the Benue, has its source rivers that flow into the Niger system . Then there are the rivers Kadéï and Mambéré , which drain over the Sangha in a southeastern direction into the Congo .
