The Buntkopf Felshüpfer ( Picathartes oreas ) is a critically endangered rockhopper from the Picathartidae family . The population of the species is spatially fragmented across central Africa . The density of this species is very low in the areas where the Buntkopf rockhopper prefers to live. Its habitat is getting smaller and smaller due to overexploitation of the rainforest. This is why the bird is on the IUCN's Red List of Endangered Species .

ID

The bird is relatively large. The head is colored carmine , black and purple. The body has a bluish-gray color that turns into a silky gray at the neck. The chest and belly are yellow. The Buntkopf rockhopper occasionally hops on the forest floor or can be spotted on short flights between the trees. Long or extended flights of the bird are not known.

The Buntkopf rockhopper can be found in southeastern Nigeria , western and southern Cameroon , Gabon , on the continental part of Equatorial Guinea and in the southwest of Bioko . Usually it moves in the canopy of the primary rainforest. The breeding places of the animals are very specific. Rock ledges are preferred to protect the nests from rain, falling stones and intruders.
