Christopher M. Perrins

Christopher Miles Perrins , LVO FRS , (born May 11, 1935 ), often Christopher M. Perrins or Chris Perrins , is a British ornithologist and non-fiction author.

Life

Perrins is the son of Leslie Howard and Violet Amy Perrins, nee Moore. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Queen Mary College , where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1957 . He then completed his doctoral studies at the University of Oxford , where he in 1963 under the direction of David Lack with the dissertation Some factors influencing brood-size and populations in tits for Ph.D. received his doctorate. In the same year he married Mary Ceresole Carslake. This marriage resulted in two children.

Perrins' research interests include population dynamics and reproductive biology of birds, particularly titmice (Paridae), mute swans, and seabirds on the Welsh islands of Skomer and Skokholm . He investigated the poisoning of swans by lead shot and he is known for his work on the bird population ecology, especially on the reproduction rates. In addition, he contributed to a pioneering long-term study of the population ecology of the great tit in Wytham Woods , a Site of Special Scientific Interest in a mixed forest, which was created in 1947 by evolutionary biologist David Lack.

From 1992 to 2002 Perrins was Professor of Ornithology at the University of Oxford, where he supervised several successful PhD students, including Matt Ridley and Tim Birkhead .

From 1974 to 2002 he was director of the Edward Gray Institute of Field Ornithology .

After Stanley Cramp's death in 1987, Perrins became the editor of the encyclopedia The Birds of the Western Palearctic .

Memberships

Perrins is a member of the American Ornithologists' Union (corresponding member (1976), member for life (1983)), the German Ornithological Society (corresponding member (1991), member for life (2001)), the Nederlandse Ornithologische Unie (member for life (1992)) and the Sociedad Española de Ornithología (member for life (2004)). From 1990 to 1994 he was President of the International Ornithological Congress , from 1993 to 1994 President of the European Ornithological Union and from 2003 to 2007 he was President of the British Ornithologists' Union .

Honors

In 1987 Perrins was named Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO). In 1993 he was named sworn candidate for the British Crown, in 1988 he received the Godman-Salvin Medal of the British Ornithologists' Union and in 1992 the RSPB Medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds . In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from Queen Mary & Westfield College. In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
