Jonathan Elphick (* 1945 in Prestatyn ) is a Welsh natural historian , ornithologist , conservationist , consultant and author of ornithological non-fiction.

Life

Elphick was born in Prestatyn in the then administrative county of Flintshire (Welsh: Sir y Fflint) and grew up in North Wales . After graduating from St. Asaph , he studied zoology from 1964 to 1968 at the University College of Swansea , one of the four colleges of the University of Wales . After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969, he became editor of natural history writings at a publishing house where ornithologist James Fisher was a board member. Since then he has worked as an editor for various publishers such as Dorling Kindersley and eventually became a freelancer.

Elphick's best-known books include The Birdwatcher's Handbook: A Guide to the Birds of Britain and Ireland , Birds: The Art of Ornithology , Atlas of Bird Migration: Tracing the Great Journeys of the World's Birds , Encyclopedia of Animals , RSPB Pocket Birds (with John Woodward) and the works The National Parks and other Wild Places of Britain and Ireland and Great Birds of Britian and Europe: 200 Star Species (both with nature photographer David Tipling ).

In addition to writing, he has published over a hundred books, many in collaboration with the Natural History Museum in London. He spent fifteen years researching two major books on the relationship between birds and human culture, Birds Britannica by Mark Cocker , published in 2005 by Chatto & Windus , and the worldwide study Birds & People by Mark Cocker and David Tipling, published by Jonathan Cape in 2013. He also writes articles and book reviews for magazines and newspapers, gives lectures and makes radio broadcasts. From 1983 to 2013 he worked on BBC Wildlife Magazine.

Elphick specializes in the cultural history of birds. His work spans a variety of aspects including practical field ornithology, biological research, natural history, and ornithological art.

Elphick is a member of the Zoological Society of London and has been a member of the Linnean Society of London since 2006 .
