Location of the Kainji reservoir |
The Kainji Reservoir is a reservoir on the Niger in northwestern Nigeria .
location
It has been dammed by the Kainji Dam since 1968 and is part of the states of Niger and Kebbi . The reservoir is an average of 12.1 m deep and has a maximum size of 1243 km² and stores 15 billion m³ of water. It is the largest in terms of area and the second largest in terms of storage capacity in Nigeria. Only the Zungeru reservoir , which is under construction , will be larger.
dam
The dam is built as a rubble dam combined with a gravity dam . It is located south of the lake in the state of Niger and produces electricity for most of Nigeria's cities. Its construction lasted from 1964 to 1968 and cost an estimated $ 209 million, a quarter of which was used for resettlement. Together with the smaller dam for a tributary, it is 10 km long and at its highest point, in the middle, 65 m high. The dam is built for twelve turbines with a production of 960 MW , of which only ten have been installed so far, producing around 800 MW. Part of this energy is sold to the neighboring state of Niger .
Protected areas
The Foge Islands in the reservoir were declared a wetland of international importance in 2008 and included in the list of the Ramsar Convention . The lake is partly in the Kainji National Park .
