Daniel Gélin (born May 19, 1921 in Angers , † November 29, 2002 in Paris ) was a French actor .

Life

Daniel Gélin completed a classical acting training and from 1940 worked equally at the theater and for the screen. He achieved international fame through Max Ophüls ' film Der Reigen (1950), in which he portrayed the young, unhappy admirer of a mature woman. Along with Gérard Philipe and Yves Montand , he was one of the most famous faces in French post-war film, but did not achieve their cult status. In international film he played a supporting role in Alfred Hitchcock's crime film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). In total, Gélin appeared in over 170 films.

Again and again he was drawn back to the theater, for which he worked not only as an actor but also as a director .

From 1945 to 1954 he was married to his colleague Danièle Delorme ; with her he formed one of the dream couples in French cinema . The marriage produced a son, the actor and director Xavier Gélin (1946–1999). Gélin was also the father of the actresses Maria Schneider (1952–2011) and Fiona Gélin (* 1962).
