A man is hung from a crane in the port of Genoa; Inspector Sironi, living separately and involved in disputes with his son, takes up the investigation and has to let himself be constrained by regulations again and again. He finds a gang that controls prices in the wholesale market, but comes across the law of silence, possible witnesses removed from the way and a corrupt employee, Commissioner Marino.

Despite all adversities, Sironi is able to set a trap by means of intercepted conversations, but when this evidence also disappears from the police headquarters, he decides to act on his own and confronts the engineer who is apparently responsible, Brera. A runaway train helps him with his plan.

“This work is really brutal.
