Nekresi or Nekressi ( Georgian ნეკრესი ; nɛkʼrɛsɪ ) is a historic Georgian city and today a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the Kakheti region , municipality of Kvareli . It is located near the village of Schilda east of Telavi . The city was founded in the 2nd or 1st century BC. Founded by the Iberian king Parnadschomi . In the 4th century, King Mirdat had a church built in Nekresi , in which one of the thirteen Syrian fathers - Abibos Nekresseli - worked in the 6th century . During this time the Nekresi diocese was founded and existed until the 19th century. The diocese included not only the Kakheti area, but also a small part of Dagestan , Didoeti.

Soon the city of Nekressi became an important place not only in Georgian Iberia , but in all of Eastern Caucasus . In the 8th century a new church with a dome was built in Nekresi.

The men's monastery is not open to visitors. There is also a two-storey palace for the Bishop of Nekressi in the complex. The palace dates from the 8th / 9th centuries. Century. A tower was built in the monastery in the 16th century.
