The municipality Qwareli ( Georgian ყვარლის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Qwarelis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of Qwareli Municipality is the small town of Qwareli . In the west, the 1,000.8 km² municipal district of Qvareli borders on the municipality of Telavi , in the south on the municipality of Gurdschaani , in the east on the municipality of Lagodechi (all also in the Kakheti region) and in the north on the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation .

The municipality extends in the area of ​​the northeast flank of the Alasani Basin ; the eponymous river Alasani marks the southwestern border of the municipality. In the north, the terrain rises to the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus , on which the state border with Russia runs. The highest mountain in this area is the 3117  m high Ninikas-Ziche. Most of the villages lie along the mountain foot.

The municipality has 29,827 inhabitants (2014); this is over a fifth less than in the previous census in 2002 (37,658).

The largest localities besides the city of Qvareli (7739 inhabitants) are the villages Akhalsopeli , Enisseli , Gawasi , Sabue , Schilda and Tschikaani (2014), each with over 1000 inhabitants .

The municipality is divided into the independent capital Qwareli and 10 municipalities (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 21 localities:

Attractions

The well-known village of Gremi is located in the municipality , the area around which was already populated in the late Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages, Gremi developed into an important economic and cultural center. In 1466 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti. An important architectural monument in Gremi is the Gremier Cathedral , which was built in 1565 under King Levan. In the municipality is also the Georgian king Parnadschomi in the 2nd century BC. The ancient city of Nekressi was founded in BC .
