The municipality Chelwachauri ( Georgian ხელვაჩაურის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Chelwachauris munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara in southwest Georgia .

The administrative seat of the municipality of Chelvachauri is located in Chelwachauri , a district of Batumi , today outside the municipality. The area of the municipality, which covers the hinterland of Batumi and a short coastal strip of the Black Sea south of the city, is 367 km². At 51,189 (2014), the population has fallen compared to the previous census (57,473 inhabitants in 2002 within today's limits) with a good 10%, the least of all the municipalities in Ajarias.
The total population of the municipality in 2002 was 90,843; however, by resolution of July 15, 2011 with effect from January 1, 2013, 16 towns with a total of 33,370 inhabitants on an area of 46 km² were incorporated into the city of Batumi, which is directly subordinate to the Autonomous Republic and therefore no longer belongs to the municipality. Among these places are the minor cities Chelwachauri, administrative seat and formerly the largest place of the municipality, and Machindschauri as well as the seaside resorts Gonio , Kwariati and Mzwane Konzchi.

In the east, the municipality of Chelwachauri is bounded by the municipality of Keda , in the north by the municipality of Kobuleti , in the west by the city of Batumi and the Black Sea and in the south by the state border with Turkey (with the province of Artvin ). The largest rivers in the municipality are the Chorochi and its right tributaries, Machachliszqali and Ajariszqali . The southern and eastern part of the municipality is mountainous, with the Shavshet Mountains in the south and the western foothills of the Meschetian Mountains in the northeast; the highest mountain is the Boloko with 1531 meters.
The largest towns, each with over 2000 inhabitants, are Achalsopeli , Ganachleba , Macho , Tchilnari , Tscharnali and Zinswla-Tschelta (2014). The seaside resort of Sarpi , where a road border crossing to Turkey is located on European route 70, is also of importance.
The municipality is divided into eleven municipalities (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 64 localities:
