The municipality Zalendschicha ( Georgian წალენჯიხის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Zalendschichis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region in western Georgia .

The administrative center of the municipality Zalendzhikha is the eponymous small town Zalendzhikha .
In the east, the 646.7 km² municipality of Zalendschicha is bounded by the municipality of Chchorozqu , in the southwest by the municipality of Zugdidi , both belonging to Mingrelia, and in the north by the Upper Svanetian municipality of Mestia . In the west it borders the de jure existing municipality Gali of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia , de facto, however, the Rajons Gali and Tkuartschal of not under Georgian control, recognized by only a few States Republic of Abkhazia .
The municipality occupies the valleys of the Enguri rivers , which is dammed up there to form the Enguri reservoir , and Tschaniszqali on the northern edge of the Colchian Plain . In the northeast, the area is bounded by the ridge of the western Egrissi Mountains , the highest peak of which is the Tschitagwelaschi at 3226 m . The mountain range on the border with Abkhazia reaches a height of about 2400 m in the extreme northwest of the municipality . In fact, all of the villages are located in the southern half of the area, which is covered by a flat mountain landscape. There it rises gradually in a northerly direction from around 150 to over 500 m above sea level.
Population and administrative division
With 26,158 inhabitants (2014), the population has fallen by over a third compared to the previous census (40,133 inhabitants in 2002), which is more than double the national average. Before that, the number of inhabitants had risen steadily since the 1930s or remained at about the same level.

The population is almost mono-ethnic Georgian (about 99.1%, mostly belonging to the sub-ethnic group of the Mingrelians ); there are also a small number of mostly Russians (as of 2002).
In addition to Zalendschicha (3847 inhabitants) there is another small town, Jvari with only 763 inhabitants. The largest villages, each with about 750 inhabitants Dschgali , Jvari (not far from the same town, formerly , Ezeri not be confused with another village of that name, the main town of a municipality), Lia , Nakipu , Satschino and Tschale (2014).

history
After the fall of the Kingdom of Georgia from the 16th century until the 19th century, the area belonged to the Principality of Mingrelia . While Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and until the early years of the Soviet Union , it was part of the Ujesds Zugdidi of the Kutais Governorate . 1930 alone was Rayon tsalenjikha formed. After the independence of Georgia in 1995 the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti and in 2006 it was converted into a municipality.

The Enguri via Dschwari is followed by the national road Sch7 ( 7 ), which , coming from Zugdidi , continues through the neighboring municipality of Mestia to the north via its administrative center of Mestia . In the south, the national road Sch6 ( შ 6 ) runs in an arc, also coming from Zugdidi via Zalendschicha in the direction of Chchorozqu - Senaki . The two roads between Jvari and Zalendschicha are connected via the Sch94 ( შ 94 ) and further south between Lia and Zalendschicha via the Sch95 ( შ 95 ). The Sch89 ( ich 89 ) runs from Zalendschicha down the Tschaniszqali .
Since the closure of the Zugdidi – Jschwari line in the 1990s, the municipality no longer has its own rail connection; the nearest train station is now Zugdidi.
