history

The area of the municipality in the Middle Ages roughly corresponded to the territory of the Tori Province of the Kingdom of Georgia . After its disintegration in the 16th century, it was initially under the influence of the independent state structure Samzche-Saatabago (Meschetien). This was soon annexed by the Ottoman Empire , whereby the former Tori lay in the border area to the Georgian Kingdom of Kartlien or later Kartlien-Kakheti and was largely depopulated during this period. After this part of Georgia was annexed to the Russian Empire as a result of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828/29, it became part of the Tbilisi Governorate in the mid-19th century and belonged to its Ujesd Gori until the early years of the Soviet Union .

In 1930 the independent Borjomi Rajon was spun off. From 1963 to 1966 the Rajon was in the meantime dissolved and its territory was assigned to the northern neighboring Rajon Chaschuri. After Georgia gained independence, the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed Samtskhe-Javakheti region in 1995 and converted into a municipality in 2006.

traffic

The international trunk road S8 ( ს 8 ) runs through the valley of the Kura and the administrative center Borjomi, which branches off from the S1 ( ს 1 ) in Chaschuri and continues via Akhaltsikhe to the Turkish border. In Bordschomi the National road branches Sch20 ( შ 20 ab), by Zaghweri and health resort leads Bakuriani and in its further course after Akhalkalaki the crest of the mountain range Trialeti with the 2454  m high Zchrazqaro- pass overcomes.

The S8 follows the Chaschuri – Wale railway through the Kura Valley via Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe. The resorts of Borjomi and Bakuriani are connected by the narrow-gauge railway Bordschomi – Bakuriani , which opened in 1902 .
