Borjomi Kharagauli National Park is the first national park in Georgia. The core area of the park is a former sapovednik , an area that was already strictly protected in Soviet times. The national park was founded in 1995 by resolution of the Georgian parliament and set up with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany and WWF Germany . The Reconstruction Loan Corporation provided a total of 19.18 million Deutsche Mark for the project between 1999 and 2003 . Of this, 2.5 million marks were invested for the park and 16.68 million marks for the infrastructure in the buffer zone around the park.

503.25 km² in the core zone of the national park belong to the wilderness areas certified by the European Wilderness Society .

In the northern part of the park, at an altitude of 400 to 1,800 meters above sea level, the colchic forest with rhododendrons , cherry laurel and holm oak dominates . At 2,000 meters above sea level, there are subalpine meadows with tall grass and, in summer, the colorful blooming Caucasian lotus, buttercups , lady's mantle and anemones . Brown bears , wolves , lynxes , roe deer and chamois as well as golden eagles and red deer live in the park . The highest mountains in the park are the Sametschwario (2,642 m), the Shawimta (2,511 m) and the Zchalzitela (2,496 m). Various healing springs arise in the park area, including Zanawi (brand name Borjomi light ) and Larebi (brand name Borjomi super light ).
