Abastumani ( Georgian აბასთუმანი ; outdated also Abastuman ) is a health resort in the municipality of Adigeni in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia .
Abastumani is located in a ravine of the Adzharian-Imeretian (Meschetian) Mountains of the Lesser Caucasus on the Ozche River at about 1300 m above sea level. The place with the status of a minority (Georgian დაბა , daba ) has 937 inhabitants (2014); In the last decades the population has declined sharply.
Abastumani has thermal springs containing soda and sulfur , the temperature of which is between 30 and 39.9 ° C. In the 19th century it developed into a popular health resort in the Russian Empire ; the place was named after the village of the same name , about five kilometers south (downstream). Many sanatoriums were built for the treatment of tuberculosis , bronchial asthma , anemia and cardiovascular diseases. After the independence of Georgia in 1991, the health tourists stayed away and all health resorts had to be closed. Two objects are now back in operation.
Observatory
On the mountain Qanobili ( location ; Georgian ყანობილი , also Kanobili ) west above the place, the first astronomical mountain observatory of the Russian Empire was built in 1892 at an altitude of almost 1600 m . In 1932 an astrophysical observatory was added. In built in the 1930s by a German expedition dome there is a still lasting working of Carl Zeiss Jena built the telescope with 40 cm aperture width . In 1956 the observatory was equipped with one of the largest Maksutov telescopes , with an opening width of 70 cm. The largest instrument is the Ritchey-Chrétien telescope AZT-11 , which was commissioned in 1976 and has a 125 cm aperture.
The asteroid (1390) Abastumani was named after Abastumani.
