Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory

The Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory ( Georgian აბასთუმნის ასტროფიზიკური ობსერვატორია ) is an institution of the Georgian Academy of Sciences . It is located on Mount Kanobili at an altitude of 1650 m near the town of Abastumani and was founded in 1932 as the first high altitude observatory in the Soviet Union . It has the international code 119 .
The scientific instruments include a mirror telescope with a 125 cm aperture, since 1956 a 70 cm meniscus telescope , a 40 cm double astrograph , a 40 cm mirror telescope, solar telescopes , a 52 cm coronograph, etc. The research focuses on the structure and evolution of galaxies , variable stars , the sun and the solar system , the structure of the upper atmosphere and the history of astronomy . Since 1937, the observatory is a bulletin out and since 2000 it houses the Center for Plasma - astrophysics .
