Zugdidi ( Mingrelian and Georgian ზუგდიდი ) is the capital of the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region in western Georgia . With 42,998 inhabitants (as of 2014) it is the seventh largest city in Georgia. Zugdidi is not far from the left bank of the Enguri River , which forms the border with Abkhazia there ; The left tributary Chchouschi flows through the city .

The name of the city comes from either the word Surgdidi (German "big hill") or the toponym Subi (Subdidi) . It was first mentioned at the beginning of the 17th century. However, it has existed much longer. Evidence of this time is a domed church from the second half of the 14th century.

Until 1803 the city was a center of the west Georgian principality of Mingrelia . The Dadiani princes built a palace with a court church and a botanical garden between 1860 and 1890 . The builder was Achille Napoleon , a grandson of Napoleon's sister Caroline Bonaparte , who married the daughter of the last Mingrelian ruler, Salome Dadiani, in 1868. The palace was ravaged by fire in 1894 and 2000 and is currently being restored.

The city's history and folklore museum has presented over 41,000 items from the Dadiani Palace holdings since 1921. These include a death mask of Napoleon, a picture of the French emperor, weapons, coats of arms, furniture, crockery and books. It also contains the Virgin Mary's robe, which was kept in the imperial treasury of Constantinople until 1453 . The relic was kept in an Orthodox monastery near Zugdidi until 1921, when it was moved to the Dadiani Palace by the Communist Party.

A modern heart clinic was opened in Zugdidi in 2005. The city has a Georgian-French high school that allows a French high school diploma.

A good 30 kilometers northeast of Zugdidi near Jvari, before the Enguri enters the Colchian Plain, stands the Enguri dam with the largest hydroelectric power station in the Caucasus , which is also the highest arch dam in the world.
