Hans Wachenhusen

Hans Wachenhusen , in early publications also Hanns Wachenhusen (born January 1, 1823 in Trier , † March 23, 1898 in Marburg ), was a German war correspondent and travel and novelist.

Life

Wachenhusen's first trips took him to Scandinavia, more precisely to Norway , Lapland and Iceland ; on these trips he also made literary notes. He translated some things from Danish and published a volume of fairy tales in 1854 .

His main activity, however, coincided with the adventures, dangers and impressions that he experienced and documented as a war correspondent for major newspapers since the Crimean War (1853-1856) and in later conflicts.

From the spring of 1854 he stayed with the Turkish army on the lower Danube , in what is now Bulgaria , and later went to Constantinople (via Varna ). After the end of the Crimean War he went to Paris , which he described in several writings, went from there to Spain and Algeria and also tried his hand at fiction with the novel Rome and Sahara (1858) . When the Prussian - Neuchâtel involvement he was present again and described his impressions. In 1859 he worked as a correspondent at the Austrian headquarters and summarized his reports in a kind of diary . In 1860 he followed Garibaldi to Naples , about which he reported as well as - in the following years - about the Prussian army in Schleswig (1864) and the Prussian-Austrian War (1866).

After 1866 he lived again in Paris, wrote a report during the world exhibition in 1867 and attended the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in Egypt in 1869 . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 he was again active as a correspondent for the Kölnische Zeitung . His reports - published in two volumes under the title Diary of the French Theater of War 1870-71 - received the attention of many circles.

After another visit to Paris, he lived in Wiesbaden, where he published the magazine Der Hausfreund from 1857 to 1873 . In addition to his numerous portrayals of war and travel, he has also written several novels and stories . Many of his works appeared as so-called railway literature in publishers that had specialized in conversation and travel literature and that were sold to travelers in small formats of 50 to 100 pages, which were also richly illustrated, for little money (a penny ) (hence also: Groschenroman ).
