Liane Dirks

Liane Dirks (born November 15, 1955 in Hamburg ) is a German writer who also works as a moderator and journalist.

Life

Liane Dirks grew up in Hamburg , the Caribbean , Bavaria and Hesse . After graduating from high school and studying , she worked as a career counselor . She has been a freelance writer since 1985 . She lives in Cologne today .

With her debut novel Die liebe Angst , she was one of the first in Germany to deal with the subject of child sexual abuse in literary form . The book, which was also received very positively by literary criticism, triggered a debate and numerous activities; it is now regarded as a kind of standard work on this topic and is cited in numerous academic papers. In 1990 Dirks took part in the “No violence against children” campaign led by then Family Minister Ursula Lehr with numerous readings and panel discussions. Dirks took up the subject of child abuse again in the novel Four Ways to Bury my Father (2002), which shed light on the perpetrator's perspective. The author was awarded the LiteraTour Nord prize for this novel . In her novel Krystyna. And love? I ask her Dirks dealt with the life of the Auschwitz survivor Krystyna Żywulska and her bizarre love affair with Thomas Harlan, who is over 20 years her junior . The book was on the SWF leaderboard for months.

Dirks is a member of the PEN Center Germany and has lectured at universities in the USA and Germany. Together with Ekkehard Skoruppa, she runs the Cologne Literature Atelier. Dirks has so far published six novels and edited 21 books.
