As juniper berry oil refers to the by steam distillation derived essential oil of ripe dried juniper berries. The yield is 0.8-2%.

Juniper berry oil is colorless to light yellow and fluid. The density is 0.854 to 0.879 g · ml -1 , it is insoluble in water, in ethanol slightly soluble under slight turbidity. The oil has a strong odor of terpene by conifers and tastes bitter and aromatic.

Juniper berry oil mainly consists of α- terpinene and the oxidation product α- terpinene-4-ol , as well as α- pinene (36%), myrcene (13%), caryophyllene , 3-carene and sabinene . The growing area, the time of harvest and the parts of the plant used for extraction influence the composition. In the leaves, for example, the main components are sabinene (19.4–31.3%), trans - sabinyl acetate (7.6–24.3%), β- thujone (4.5–25.8%) and terpinene 4-ol (3.4-13%).

use

Juniper berry oil is used medicinally as a diuretic, in the cosmetic industry it is used as a fragrance. Use in food is not permitted.
