Sabinen (stress on the third syllable: Sabin e n ) is a chemical compound from the group of monoterpenes , more specifically the thujene . The natural substance , which chemically is a cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon , occurs mainly in the essential oils of marjoram and the leaves of the Sedge tree .

(+) - Sabinen can be found with up to 30% in the Russian sad tree oil ( Juniperus sabina ), (-) - Sabinen in the Indian medicinal plant Zanthoxylum rhetsa . Further occurrences are in the kubebe , the lime , marjoram, the masterwort , the yarrow , in the black cardamom and in the juniper .

Sabinen is an oily liquid that is sensitive to light and oxidation and is insoluble in water. It dissolves in ethanol and diethyl ether .

use

The essential oil of the Sade tree, which contains sabine, was used in the past to treat warts and condylomas because of its strong skin-irritating, necrotic effect . Today Sabinen is still used homeopathically .

Toxic properties

In high doses Sabinen can lead to gastrointestinal complaints, nausea, vomiting and kidney failure. More severe poisoning can lead to internal bleeding, which is noticeable in bloody diarrhea or bloody urine. Very high doses cause unconsciousness and convulsions, which can lead to death if the paralysis also affects the central respiratory function. When applied to the skin, Sabinen can cause skin irritation.
