The municipality of Baghdati ( Georgian ბაღდათის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Baghdatis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Imereti region in the central part of Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of the municipality is the eponymous small town Baghdati . The 815 km² large municipality is in the southeast by the municipality of Charagauli , in the northeast by the municipality of Sestaponi , in the north on short sections by the municipality of Terjola and the territory of the region subordinate city of Kutaisi , in the northwest by the municipality of Zqaltubo and in the west by the Waniizipalität limited, all also in Imereti. In the south it borders on the municipalities of Adigeni and Akhaltsikhe of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region .

About a quarter of the territory in the north of the municipality is located in the southeastern part of the Imeretian Plain , which rises there in an easterly direction from below 100  m to about 200  m above sea level. The northern border of the municipality is marked by the Rioni flowing through the plain , into which the most important left tributary Qwirila flows in the far north . South of the plain, the terrain rises rapidly to over 1000  m , and then gradually to the ridge of the Meschetian Mountains , which form the southern border of the municipality and in this area with an unnamed peak reaches a height of 2608  m . Basically, the municipality includes the valleys of the left Rioni tributary Chaniszqali and its tributaries. Most of the villages are in the lowlands and in the lower part of the river valleys in the densely forested mountains.

In the extreme southeast of the municipality extends part of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park ; further to the west, its border runs roughly along the southern municipal and regional border.

Population and administrative division

With 21,582 inhabitants (2014), the population has fallen by around a quarter compared to the previous census (29,235 inhabitants in 2002), well above the national average. Before that, the number of inhabitants had been largely stable from the 1930s to slightly declining overall.

history

From the collapse of the Kingdom of Georgia in the 15th century until the 19th century, the area belonged virtually continuously to the Kingdom of Imereti . While Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and until the early years of the Soviet Union , it was part of the Ujesds Kutais of the Kutais Governorate ( Kutais was the official form of the city name at that time).

In 1930 the Baghdati Rajon was formed there. 1940, the main town received after born there poet Vladimir Mayakovsky the name Mayakovsky, and the name of the Rajons was adjusted accordingly ( Russian Маяковский район , Mayakovsky rayon, Georgian მაიაკოვსკის რაიონი , Maiakowskis Raioni ). In 1990 the previous names were restored. After the independence of Georgia in 1995, the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Imereti and in 2006 it was converted into a municipality.

traffic

Due to the extreme north of the municipality which there runs the highway developed new route of the international highway S1 ( ს 1 ) from Tbilisi to Russian or Abkhaz border (in this section at the same time European route E60 ). There, right on the municipal border not far from the city of Kutaisi, there is also the Rioni train station on the Poti - Tbilisi (- Baku) route, which is also the starting point for a route via Kutaisi to Tqibuli .

Coming from Kutaisi via the S1, the administrative center Baghdati and the health resort Sairme to the almost 2300  m high pass over the Mescheti Mountains, the national road Sch14 ( შ 14 ) crosses the municipality from north to south, on to Abastumani and into the southern part of the municipality Adigeni. Connection from Baghdati to the neighboring municipal seat of Sestaponi to the east is via the Sch54 ( შ 54 ), to the west on the left of the Rioni via Wani to the S12 ( ს 12 ) at Samtredia via the Sch13 ( შ 13 ); the Sch51 ( შ 51 ) is a cross-connection between Sch13 and Sch14 in the northwest of the municipality.
