The municipality Tianeti ( Georgian თიანეთის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Tianetis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in the north-eastern central part of Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of the municipality is the minority (Georgian დაბა , daba ) Tianeti . The municipality of 906.3 km² borders on the municipality of Dusheti in the west and north and on the municipality of Mtskheta in the southwest , both also in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, and in the east on the municipality of Akhmeta and on a relatively short section in the southeast on the Sagaredscho municipality , both in the Kakheti region .

The municipality, located northeast of the Georgian capital Tbilisi , comprises the valley of the upper reaches of the Iori and its tributaries from the source in the north to the Erzo basin (Georgian ერწოს ქვაბული , Erzos kwabuli ) in the south, through which the Adsesi tributary flows . It is framed by mountain ridges: in the north and west by the Cartlian Mountains , which form the watershed to the Aragwi and on the northwest border of the municipality with the Tschitscho rises to 3076  m above sea level, in the east by the Kakheti Mountains as a watershed to the Alasani , which in the North is also over 3000  m high. In the extreme northeast of the municipality, above the Iori source, when the two mountain ranges meet, not far from where they branch off from the watershed ridge of the Greater Caucasus, which is only slightly higher there, an unnamed summit reaches a height of 3276  m . In a southerly direction, both mountains gradually fall with their ridges to below 1500  m in sections . The Kakheti Mountains merge seamlessly with the Gombori ridge in the extreme southeast ; the highest peak in this area is the Satibe with 1705  m .

Population and administrative division

With 9,468 inhabitants (2014), the number of inhabitants fell by around a third compared to the previous census (14,014 inhabitants in 2002), which is twice the national average. The population had been decreasing steadily since the 1950s (18,559 inhabitants in 1959).

Population development

Note: census data

The municipality is almost exclusively inhabited by Georgians (98.3%); 1.0% are Ossetians and 0.3% Russians (as of 2002).

The largest localities besides the minor city Tianeti (2479 inhabitants) are the minor city Sioni and the villages Saqdrioni , Schebota and Tuschurebi (2014) with over 300 inhabitants each .

The municipality is divided into 12 communities with a total of 86 villages, 10 of which have no permanent residents. For the two minor cities (Georgian დაბა , daba ) Tianeti and Sioni, the municipalities are referred to as the "territorial organ " (Georgian teritoriuli organo, ტერიტორიული ორგანო ), for the village communities as temi, თემი :

history

The area of the municipality largely corresponds to the historical region Erzo-Tianeti, first mentioned in the 11th century. After the disintegration of the medieval Kingdom of Georgia in the 16th century, it belonged to the independent Kingdom of Kakheti, then to the unified Kartlien- Kakheti in 1762 . During the membership of the Russian Empire from 1801 it formed the southwestern part of the Ujesds Tioneti (spelling at that time) in the Tbilisi Governorate .

After the Ujesd continued to exist in the early years of the Soviet Union , it was connected to the neighboring Ujesd Duscheti to the west in 1924 , before the independent Tianeti Rajon was spun off in 1932, roughly within the boundaries of today's municipalities. After Georgia gained independence, the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in 1995 and converted into a municipality in 2006.

traffic

From the capital Tbilisi, the national road Sch30 ( შ 30 ) leads over a 1400  m high pass into the Erzo basin and on to Tianeti. From there to the west there is a connection to Schinwali am Aragwi and the international trunk road S3 (also European route 117 ) via the Sch27 ( შ 27 ), which overcomes a 1,300  m high pass in the Kartlischer Gebirge . From Tianeti to the east, the Sch43 ( შ 43 ) crosses the approximately 1150  m high Kachetic Mountains in the direction of Akhmeta , further along the northern flank of the Alasani basin to just before Lagodechi . The national road Sch142 ( შ 142 ) branches off the Sch30 and follows the Adsesi and Iori rivers downwards over the southeastern border of the municipality, with a further connection in the direction of Tbilisi, Telavi and Sagaredscho .

The municipality does not have a rail connection ; the nearest train stations are in Tbilisi and the regional capital Mtskheta .
