The Kakheti Mountains ( Georgian კახეთის ქედი ) form a mountain range in Georgia , which branches off from the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus in a southerly direction.
The Kakheti Mountains form the watershed between the upper Iori in the west and the tributaries of the Alasani in the east. Along the mountain range runs the border between Mtskheta-Mtianeti in the west and the eponymous region of Kakheti to the east . The mountain range has a length in north-south direction of about 80 km. In the middle section it reaches heights of 2500 m . In the north, at the transition to the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus, the ridge of the Cartlian Mountains, which runs further west, meets that of the Kakheti Mountains. There the Kakheti Mountains reach a maximum height of 3032 m . The mountains consist mainly of sandstone , marl and mica schist . The mountain slopes are covered with deciduous deciduous forest and shrub vegetation. Above that, at altitudes over 2000 m , grows alpine flora.
