The Alasani ( Georgian ალაზანი ) is a river in the Caucasus . It is one of the main tributaries of the Kura in eastern Georgia . It is 351 kilometers long and, in its lower reaches, forms the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan . It flows into the Kura in the Mingəçevir reservoir .

The river arises in the Greater Caucasus from the confluence of two small rivers that originate south of the mountain ridge. It flows first to the city of Akhmeta to the south, then through the fertile Alazani Basin , a center of Georgian viticulture that has been a main gateway for Persian invaders for centuries , to the southeast.

In winter the Alasani dries up, in late spring it swells enormously due to the melting snow in the mountains and regularly causes flooding . It is mainly used for the irrigation of cultivated areas and the drinking water supply. Chinese investors built various smaller hydropower plants along the course of the river in the 1990s , which use the rapid flow of the Alasani. The tourism industry offers rafting trips on the river.

Slight pollution of the river with biological substances results from inadequately treated wastewater from cities and communities as well as from farms. The water quality was found to be poor in the Kvareli and Lagodechi districts .

Alazani also serves as the name of various Georgian wines, including the semi-dry brands Marani Alasani Valley , and Old Tbilisi Alasani , as well as the lovely Binekhi Alazani Valley . This valley is also famous for the cultivation of other popular wines, such as the dry white wine Zinandali .
