Alazani Basin

Plain and Alazani near Akhmeta, in the background the Caucasus

The Alazani Basin is a plain in eastern Georgia and western Azerbaijan . It is bounded in the north by the Greater Caucasus and in the south by the Gombori mountain range. The river Alasani , which gives it its name, flows through the plain .

The basin is bordered on both sides by steep slopes, from which hills extend into the plain. The mounds are made of material that was carried into the basin by the rivers. The rest of the pool is level. The landscape was formed from the Pliocene onwards from the deposited sediments from the surrounding mountains. The plain is one of the most fertile in Georgia and is a center of viticulture.

Due to climate change, a decrease in the available water is to be expected for the basin. To ensure further agricultural use, options for targeted water retention and irrigation are therefore being investigated.
