Lagodechi ( Georgian ლაგოდეხი ) is a city in eastern Georgia , in the Kakheti region . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name Lagodechi and has about 7500 inhabitants (2009).
location
Lagodechi is about 125 kilometers as the crow flies east of the Georgian capital Tbilisi . The capital of the Kakheti region, Telavi , is about 70 kilometers to the west.
The main ridge of the Greater Caucasus begins to rise from the Alasani Valley immediately northeast of Lagodechi . The Alasani is a left tributary of the Kura . The triangle between Georgia and Russia and Azerbaijan is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Lagodechi. The Chodoridag , which is nearby but already on the territory of Dagestan , reaches an altitude of 3569 m .
population
The majority of the population is made up of ethnic Georgians. In the municipality, the population share of Azerbaijanis is relatively high with 22.3%: Lagodechi borders directly northeast on Azerbaijan.
history
The place was first mentioned in the 8th century when it belonged to the province of Heretia . A Georgian Orthodox monastery has been located there since the 11th century, when Lagodechi came with the area to the Kingdom of Kakheti, and is still the seat of one of the eparchies of this church.
In the Soviet period, the place became the administrative center of a raion of the same name , initially received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1962 city rights.

Culture and sights
The Lagodechi National Park stretches in the mountains of the Greater Caucasus that rise above the city to the Russian border .
Economy and transport infrastructure
In the city there are companies in the food and luxury goods industry (tobacco, wine, canned fruit, essential oils). It is surrounded by an agricultural area.
The S5 highway runs through Lagodechi from Tbilisi to the Azerbaijani border. The border crossing is about five kilometers east of the city. On the Azerbaijani side, the M5 trunk road joins it; there the closest city is Balakən, a good ten kilometers away . The closest train station to Lagodechi in Georgia is in the town of Znori , almost 40 kilometers to the south-west , where a branch line from the Tbilisi - Telavi line ends.
