The S-5 ( Georgian : ს -5) is a main road in Georgia . It leads from the capital Tbilisi via Lagodechi to the border with Azerbaijan . In Azerbaijan it continues as the M5 to Zaqatala .
history
During the Soviet Union , the road was part of the A315 that ran from Tbilisi to Şamaxı and formed an alternative route to Baku . Two thirds of the A315 has been in Azerbaijan since 1991 and is numbered as M5. The rest are in Georgia and are numbered as S-5. The route from Tbilisi was modernized and expanded to 2 × 3 lanes. This piece of the road (10 km) is considered to be one of the most modern in Georgia.
