Sagaredscho ( Georgian საგარეჯო ) is a city in eastern Georgia , in the Kakheti region .

It is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name Sagaredscho and has 10,871 inhabitants (2014).

location

Sagaredscho is located almost 50 kilometers as the crow flies east of the state capital Tbilisi and 25 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Telavi at the southwestern foot of the Gombori ridge (Georgian გომბორის ქედი , Gomboris Kedi ), which runs across Kakheti and which extends between the wide valley of the Alasani in the northeast and the south-west of the Iori flowing through the low mountainous Iori highlands . About ten kilometers north of Sagaredscho, already on the territory of the neighboring municipality of Telavi , the Gombori mountain range with the Ziwi reaches its greatest height of 1991  m . The city center is a good four kilometers away from the left bank of the Iori.

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in the 11th century under the name Twali (literally "eye") and traditionally regarded as the main town of the historical area of Outer Kakheti ( Gare Kakheti ). From 14./15. Century it belonged to the Georgian Orthodox monastery Dawit Gareja further south , whereupon it from the 17./18. Century as Twal-Sagaredscho (about "Twal, possessed by Gareja") was called. In the 19th century the name was shortened to the current one.

In the Soviet period, Sagaredscho became the administrative center of a raion of the same name with the status of a selo before city rights were granted in 1962.

Culture and sights

In Sagaredscho, as the seat of one of the eparchies of the Georgian Orthodox Apostle Church, there are several old churches. The city has a local museum.

A twelve kilometer long, winding road leads from the city to the recreational and climatic health resort Koda (also Ziwi-Koda) at an altitude of more than 1600  m .

Economy and Infrastructure

In Sagaredscho there are companies in the food industry (wine, canned food, dairy products) and the building materials industry.

The city is located on the railway line from Tbilisi to Telavi, which was opened in 1915 and electrified on this section in 1964 with 3000 volts direct current (route kilometer 48; train station in a district four kilometers southeast of the city center). To the south, Sagaredscho is bypassed by the S5 highway , which continues to connect Tbilisi via Znori to the Azerbaijani border at Lagodechi .
