The municipality of Sagaredscho ( Georgian საგარეჯოს მუნიციპალიტეტი , Sagaredschos munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of the municipality of Sagaredscho is the small town of Sagaredscho . The 1,491 square kilometer municipality is bordered to the west by the municipality Gardabani region Kvemo Kartli , in the northwest to north on a relatively short section of the municipalities Mtskheta and Tianeti region Mtskheta-Mtianeti , from northeast to southeast on the Kakhetian municipalities Akhmeta , Telavi , Gurjaani and Sighnaghi and in the south to the Republic of Azerbaijan .

The Gombori ridge runs through the northeastern part of the municipality, and in this part it reaches its greatest height. The highest peak Ziwi with 1991  m is in the neighboring municipality of Telavi not far from the border; the highest peaks of the ridge on the territory of the municipality of Sagaredscho are Shatis Mta and Lolostini, each 1862  m . In the extreme northwest of the municipality, west of the Iori River, the Sagurami Mountains with the 1874  m high Ialno Ridge extend towards Kura . The central and southern part of the municipality is occupied by the dry and sparsely populated Iori highlands .

Population and administrative division

With 51,761 inhabitants (2014), the population has decreased compared to the previous census (59,212 inhabitants in 2002), but less than the Georgian average.

In the municipality, the population share of Azerbaijanis is relatively high with 31.9% (2002) - only exceeded by several municipalities in the neighboring region of Niederkartlien to the west. Most of them live in several villages in the east of the municipality.

The largest villages besides the city of Sagaredscho (10,871 inhabitants) are the villages of Kakabeti , Kwemo Lambalo , Manawi , Patardseuli , Semo Lambalo and Tulari (2014), each with over 2,500 inhabitants .

The municipality is divided into the independent capital Sagaredscho and 24 municipalities (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 46 villages (two of which have permanent residents):

Attractions

In the municipality of Sagaredscho lies the village of Udscharma , which was an important political center of the country in the Middle Ages. A residence was built in Udscharma in the 5th century by the Georgian King Vakhtang I Gorgassali . Not far from the village received in the Usharma fortress . Another outstanding architectural monument is the Dawit Gareja monastery located near the border with Azerbaijan , an important religious center of medieval Georgia.
