history

After the fall of the Kingdom of Georgia from the 16th century until the 19th century, the area belonged to the Principality of Mingrelia . While Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and up until the early years of the Soviet Union , it was predominantly part of the Ujesds Senaki of the Kutais Governorate ; only a small part in the southeast belonged to the Ujesd Kutais.

In 1930 the independent Martwili district was spun off. In 1936 the capital was named Gegetschkori after the revolutionary Aleksi (Sascha) Gegetschkori (1887–1928) who was born nearby , and the name of the Rajon was adapted accordingly ( Russian Гегечкорский район , Gegetschkorski rajon; Georgian გეგეჭკორის რაიონი , Gegetsch ). In 1990 the previous names were restored. After the independence of Georgia in 1995 the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti and in 2006 it was converted into a municipality.
