The municipality Dedopliszqaro ( Georgian დედოფლისწყაროს მუნიციპალიტეტი , Dedopliszqaros munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in the far east of Georgia . It emerged from the existing in the Soviet period Zitelizqaro Rajon ( წითელწყაროს რაიონი , Zitelzqaros raioni ), after the then name of the administrative center Zitelizqaro.
geography
The administrative center of the municipality is the city of Dedopliszqaro . The area is 2529.2 km². The municipality is bounded in the northwest and west by the municipality of Sighnaghi ; in the south, east and northeast it is surrounded by the state border with the Republic of Azerbaijan .
The north reaches the southeast end of the Gombori ridge with the exactly 1000 m high Nikoras Ziche in the immediate vicinity of Dedopliszqaro as the highest peak in the area. The ridge separates the Alasani basin with the Alasani river from the Iori highlands , which is already outside the municipality . The dry and extremely sparsely populated highlands take up most of the municipality and extend to the Iori River on the border with Azerbaijan in the southeast. The flat north-east of the highlands is also known as the Shirakisteppe .
Population and administrative division
With 21,221 inhabitants (2014), the population has fallen sharply compared to the previous census (30,811 inhabitants 2002).
