The municipality of Telavi ( Georgian თელავის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Telawis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .

geography

Administrative center of the municipality is the city of Telavi (19,629 inhabitants), but this was in 2014 spun off as capital of the region from the municipality and now an independent administrative unit next to this is. The 1095 km² large municipality is bordered in the west to northwest by the municipality Akhmeta , in the east by the municipality Qvareli , in the southeast by the municipality Gurdschaani and in the southwest by the municipality Sagaredscho , all also in the Kakheti region. In the northeast it borders the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation .

The central part of the municipality around the city of Telavi, where most of the localities are also located, is located in the upper (northwest) section of the Alasani Basin , which is flowed through by the eponymous Alasani . To the northeast, the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus rises , on which the state border with Russia runs in the eastern part; in the western part it forms the border with the historical region of Tusheti , which today belongs to the municipality of Akhmeta. The ridge reaches a height of 3115  m on the territory of the municipality with an unnamed peak . In the southwest of the municipality extends the Gombori ridge , which reaches its greatest height in this section around the 1989  m high Ziwi .

Population and administrative division

The municipality has 38,721 inhabitants (2014); within today's limits this is a good fifth less than in the previous census in 2002 (48,784 inhabitants; with the city of Telavi, which was part of the municipality in 2002, 70,589).

Population development

Note: census data. 1951 Achmeta district spun off. 2014 City of Telavi spun off: for comparison, the population of the municipality with the city is also shown.

The largest localities, each with over 2500 inhabitants, are the villages of Kurdghelauri , Qarajala , Wardissubani and Zinandali (2014).

The municipality is divided into 22 municipalities (here mostly with only one village each simply called "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ; otherwise temi, თემი ) with a total of 29 villages:
