The municipality Gardabani ( Georgian გარდაბნის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Gardabnis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Niederkartlien region in southeast Georgia .
geography
The administrative center of the municipality is the small town of Gardabani . The 1304.1 km² municipality borders in the east on the municipality Sagaredscho of the Kakheti region , in the north to northwest on relatively short sections on the municipalities Tianeti and Mzcheta in the Mzcheta-Mtianeti region and in the west on the municipalities Tetrizqaro and - interrupted by the territory of the region subordinate town of Rustavi - Marneuli , all also in the Niederkartlien region. In the northwest, the municipality surrounds the capital region of Tbilisi , while the state border with Azerbaijan runs in the southeast .
A large part of the municipality lies in the area of the Lower Cartlian Plain , through which the Kura flows partly along the south-western border of the area . To the northeast of the plain, the northwestern foothills of the Iori highlands connect to the eponymous river Iori , which flows for a short section through the northeast of the municipality. Towards the northern border, the terrain rises to the Sagurami Mountains with the 1874 m high Ialno ridge. Part of the Tbilisi National Park extends there . In the west, in the middle of the plain, the Jagludscha ridge rises up to 785 m , and further north, the easternmost foothills of the Trialeti Mountains are reached there on the border with Tbilisi .
To the west of the municipality of artificial is Kumissisee that by filling a natural from the 1950s Depression was, and cross-border in the southeast by Azerbaijan Dschandarisee (Candargöl).
Population and administrative division
With 81,876 inhabitants (2014), the population has decreased compared to the previous census (93,015 inhabitants 2002), but only due to the transfer of the area of four municipalities with a total of 14 localities (according to the 2002 classification) and over 20,000 inhabitants to the capital region Tbilisi per year 2007 (the Minor town / daba Didi Lilo with four villages belonging to the municipality on the Stadtrajon Samgori , the Minor town Kodschori with four other villages on the Stadtrajons Mtatsminda and Wake , the municipality Tabachmela with three places also on the Stadtrajon Mtatsminda and the municipality with the only one Place Ponitschala to the Stadtrajon Krzanissi ).
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the number of inhabitants fell by around a fifth; the earlier fluctuating values are difficult to compare due to changes in the area.

The municipality is populated to 53.2% by ethnic Georgians , 43.7% by Azerbaijanis . There are also mainly Armenians and Russians (0.9% each, as of 2002). Most of the localities are in fact mono-ethnic (mostly over 90% in each case) either by Georgians or Azerbaijanis.
The largest localities besides the city of Gardabani (10,753 inhabitants, mostly Azerbaijanis) are the predominantly Georgian villages Gamardschweba , Martqopi and Sartitschala, each with over 4,000 inhabitants , and the villages Kessalo , Mughanlo , Nasarlo and Qarajalari (2014), which are predominantly inhabited by Azerbaijanis . Sartitschala was originally a Caucasian German village called Marienfeld .
The municipality is divided into the independent capital Gardabani and 18 municipalities (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 40 localities:

Due to its location around the capital Tbilisi, important highways and railway lines run from there in a south and east direction across the territory of the municipality of Gardabani .
These are the international highways S4 (also part of European route 60 ) to the Azerbaijani border, S5 via Sagaredscho , Znori and Lagodechi also to the Azerbaijani border and S6 (also part of European route 117 ) via Bolnissi to the Armenian border. The eastern ring road around Tbilisi, designated as the S9 , also runs mainly on the territory of the municipality of Gardabani . On the left of the Kura, parallel to the S4 running to the right of the river, the national road Sch32 ( შ 32 ) leads as a further connection from Tbilisi to Rustawi, further as Sch66 ( შ 66 ) via the municipal seat of Gardabani to another, only locally used border crossing to Azerbaijan. In the northeast branches close to Sartitschala of the S5 national road Sch38 ( შ 38 ) according Telawi from.
The municipalities cross the railway lines (Poti–) Tiflis – Baku , Tiflis – Yerevan and Tiflis – Telavi .
